Selection of images of fashion disasters

Hallo Readers,

WTF has been watching the new version of Day of the Jackal with Eddie Redmayne on Sky Atlantic and it is very entertaining. Despite the fact that he is a mercenary who kills loads of people at the drop of a hat, including (spoiler alert) someone he gave one to only the previous night, you are not supposed to mind, because he is drop-dead handsome, takes every opportunity to display some very well-honed abs and is always scaling up something or swinging from girder to girder or other manly pursuits. Plus he speaks nicely and loves his wife. But the thing is, Day of the Jackal is fiction. The case of Luigi Mangione is real and is playing out in real time on every TV and radio station, especially CNN which has talked of little else all week.

Mangione is alleged to have murdered Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson who was shot in the back in a Manhattan street. The shooter then went on the run, sparking a nationwide search. Social media began to speculate on the motives for the killing, including the fact that Thompson’s company was notoriously reluctant to pay up on claims made by the people to whom it had sold health insurance, finding all manner of excuses to deny liability and which preferred to suggest a bandaid and a Panadol instead of medical procedures and the necessary medication. At which point, the shooter became an amalgam of Robin Hood, Che Guevara and Judge Dredd, a man who was performing a public service in ridding the country of a shameless leech like the deceased. Then a picture of the shooter was released and it turned out that he was a good looking young man with olive skin, brooding brown eyes and curly black hair. Whereupon many people lost their senses and any moral compass they might once have had, if indeed they had ever had one, which possibly they did not. Once Mangione was arrested, having been spotted by an eagle-eyed employee in a McDonalds in a small Pennsylvania town, and proved indeed to be young, handsome and brooding but with an illegal firearm and some iffy political views, the hysteria got even worse. If he did it, then he was entitled to do it. Thompson had it coming. Mangione had serious back pain and was exacting revenge for being denied proper treatment. Or he was fighting a war against capitalism. Or all of the above.  And anyway – he was hot.

Had the shooter been short and balding with a beer belly and pustules, he would certainly have attracted a lot less interest. But guilt or innocence should not be determined by whether the accused is hot. Being hot is all well and good, but it is not a defence to murder. And neither is back pain. Or rage against the machine. Or the fact that someone’s business practices may be dismal. What happened to the rule of law? When did it become acceptable for citizens to wipe people out on a public street because they want revenge? If a good looking person assassinates Dr Fauci because he had foisted vaccines and lockdowns on the US, would that be acceptable? If  someone who looks like Angelina Jolie or Lord Byron takes out a bookie because they believe that gambling has ruined lives or shoots the CEO of a brewery because they believe alcohol has killed people, would that be OK? When did life start imitating art? And what the hell are we going to do about it?

*********************************************************************************

We start our review of the week’s wanky wear at the British Independent Film Awards with actor Jessie Buckley wearing Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood,

If  a Greek goddess went to a fancy dress party as a titsy dental nurse, this is what she would look like.

Next up, we have singer Cardi B wearing an Alaïa sheepskin cropped jacket and some frightfully frightful other garments.

The jacket costs £3,900 and is OK but WTF is deeply concerned with the bodysuit and its built in nursing pads, not to mention the deeply mystifying things hanging down from the waist of her jeans, like a couple of bell pulls.

Now we have actor Ariana de Bose attending the New York premiere of Kraven the Hunter, wearing Dolce & Gabbana.

Yawn. Please stop. Please. Giant drawers and a tiny bralette under a fishing net do not count as clothing. Not even at all…..

And here is mega-diva-de-luxe, singer  Beyoncé wearing Disney x Balmain (yes, really).

The tit covers are like a couple of mottled headlights. The whole dress is tacky, tacky, tacky and seems to have been modelled on alien crop circles in an Iowan field.

This is actor Tika Sumpter attending  the London premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 wearing Nedret Taciroglu.

It is made out of metal. Honestly. Can you imagine walking the Red Carpet dressed as a tin can? And the bodice is deeply unfortunate with its visible nipple activity. Those breasts are definitely making a break for freedom like Steve McQueen and Richard Attenborough in The Great Escape.

OK this one is mad. We are at Comicon in Rio where we find actor Anya Taylor-Joy wearing Chloé. Mind how you go with this one……

Yurgle. She is wearing Victorian bloomers and some sort of bra or bodice. Sorry, but just as leggings are not trousers (WTF has been railing about this for EVER), bloomers are not trousers, nor indeed are they clothes. They are under-garments, which means that they are supposed to be worn under garments not as garments. And since Anya is ghostly pale with blonde hair, white is so not her colour.

And finally we have our old friend, Julia Fox, wearing something the nature of which passeth all understanding…..

Er…. you what? We have had tit pads, tit covers and escaping tits, all in one week. Now we have saggy-tit-bags and a pussy pelmet. One day Julia will wear turtle necked sweaters and jeans. Make it soon…

This week’s It’s Got To Go comes from WTF aficionado Daniel from Stevenage who was outraged about Luigi Mangione fans and people’s inability to distinguish right from wrong. See above. He is completely right. It’s Got To Go.

OK Readers, that’s your lot for this week. By  the way, you can now follow WTF on Bluesky where she is a refugee from the ugliness of Twitter, and goes under the handle @WTFfashionshark. Keep your tip top comments coming through and your splendid suggestions for It’s Got To GoLet us meet again next Friday for the fabled WTF Christmas Turkey Poll.  See you there. Be good x
